He attended Brooklyn area schools before entering the seminary at Redemptorist Preparatory Academy in August 1919. He took formal religious vows on August 2, 1927, and was ordained a priest 1932 at Mount St Alphonsus in New York City.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">His early years as a priest were spent within the New York Diocese; however, in September 1941, knowing the country was facing war, Captain Father Lawrence E. Lynch enlisted in the US Army as a chaplain.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">He was first assigned to the 8th Infantry at Camp Wheeler, Georiga, before being transferred to the 7th Armored Division. He is rumored to have created a poker club, using his winnings to support a nearby leper colony. Captain Father Lawrence Lynch was known to be a good poker player and is believed to have made substantial donations to the colony.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The men in his unit called him "Father Cyclone."</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">In February 1945, Captain Father Lawrence Lynch requested transfer to the 165th Infantry Regiment, which contained the "Fighting 69th", the New York National Guard unit. She became interested in flying after seeing a stunt pilot performance in 1939 and obtained her pilot's license in June 1941 after completing a civilian pilot training program.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Being unable to fly in the US, Lieutenant Colonel Williams relocated to Canada to work for Canadian Colonial Airlines. Lucas left school at 14 and enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 8, 1942, forging his mother's signature in response to World War II.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After training, where he qualified as a sharpshooter, he was first posted to Jacksonville, Florida, before leaving for Pearl Harbor in November 1943. Dissatisfied with his duty station on Pearl Harbor and wanting to enter combat, on January 10, 1945, Captain Jacklyn Harold Lucas stowed aboard the USS Deuel with the 26th Marines. He turned himself in to command when far enough out to sea and was busted down to a private and assigned to rifleman duties.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">On February 19, 1945, Captain Jacklyn Harold Lucas participated in the Marine landing on Iwo Jima, and while on patrol with three other marines, he earned a Congressional Medal of Honor when his patrol engaged a pocket of 11 enemy soldiers, who returned fire and lobbed two grenades. Captain Jacklyn Harold Lucas pushed the grenades deep into the sand of the beach with the butt of his rifle and then covered them with his body, saving the lives of the other three marines, who disabled the enemy. Believin Captain Lucas dead, he was left, and the remaining marines continued on patrol.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">He was discovered alive by a following unit, who got Captain Jacklyn H. Lucas to a corpsman, and was evacuated, landing in San Francisco on March 28, 1945. He underwent more than 20 surgeries and would live with more than 250 pieces of shrapnel. President Harry Truman presented him with the Congressional Medal of Honor on October 4, 1945. He and his men were under heavy fire. Captain Arlo Laverne Olson earned a Congressional Medal of Honor by leading offensive forrays against enemy troops, where Captain Arlo Laverne Olson returned live grenades thrown at his men and attacked enemy strongholds. On October 27, 1943, near the summit and severely wounded, Captain Arlo Laverne Olson secured defensive positions for his men before allowing himself to be medically evacuated. Corporal Desmond Doss saved at least 75 men, lowering some from the top of the hill in a cargo net, despite being wounded four times. He also kicked a grenade away from a wounded man. Corporal Desmond Doss was evacuated on May 21, 1945. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">After the war, Corporal Desmond Doss moved to Rising Fawn, Georgia, where he owned a small farm.
