Lieutenant Junior Grade David Richmond Metcalf was born on March 27, 1976, and grew up in Marietta, Georgia. A gifted athlete, he excelled as a swimmer, wrestler, and martial artist, disciplines that reflected both physical discipline and quiet determination.

In 2000, Metcalf enlisted in the United States Navy. He was accepted into Naval Special Warfare training and graduated from SEAL training in 2002. Over the course of his military career, Lieutenant Junior Grade Metcalf deployed multiple times with his SEAL team, serving in the Pacific region and in Iraq and Afghanistan during the War on Terror.

Driven by a desire to further serve those beside him, Metcalf applied to and was accepted into the Interservice Physician Assistant Program and the University of Nebraska. He graduated in 2016 and was subsequently assigned to the 8th Marine Regiment, where he continued his service as a medical professional supporting Marines in demanding environments.

On January 2, 2019, Lieutenant Junior Grade David Richmond Metcalf died as a result of complications related to repeated traumatic brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. He is buried at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.

The David R. Metcalf Invisible Wounds Foundation was established in his honor, continuing his legacy by advocating for awareness and support for veterans suffering from unseen injuries.
