First Lieutenant Michael Neal Monroe, A Marine's Story
First Lieutenant Michael Neal Monroe was born on October 27, 1963, in Auburn, Washington. He attended Auburn High School before attending the University of Washington. Known for his wide-ranging interests, Monroe was both a musician and an athlete, participating in football, swimming, and cycling—pursuits that reflected discipline, teamwork, and endurance.
In 1986, Monroe enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He later earned his commission and was assigned to the 3rd Marine Battalion, embracing the responsibilities of leadership and service that defined Marine Corps life. His training and assignments prepared him for deployment amid rising global tensions in the Middle East.
In August 1990, First Lieutenant Monroe deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, as U.S. and coalition forces responded to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Though the ground war had not yet begun, the region was already marked by hazardous conditions, demanding constant vigilance during patrols and operations.
On October 30, 1990, First Lieutenant Michael Neal Monroe died during a night patrol following a jeep accident. He was 27 years old.
First Lieutenant Monroe is buried at Mountain View Cemetery in Auburn, Washington. He is remembered as a Marine officer who answered the call during a critical moment, serving with commitment and purpose during the opening months of the Gulf War.
