Private Dorothy Lee Horner Fails
Born July 6, 1965 - Died March 19, 1991

Dorothy Lee Horner Fails was born on July 6, 1965, in San Manuel. She graduated from Mammoth–San Manuel High School before enlisting in the Arizona Army National Guard in July 1990. After enlistment, she trained in motor transport operations.

Private Fails was assigned to the 1404th Transportation Company. In the autumn of 1990, she deployed to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm. Her duties included transporting battlefield supplies and prisoners of war in support of coalition operations during and after active combat.

On March 19, 1991, Private Dorothy Lee Horner Fails died in the line of duty when a civilian bus collided with her military transport vehicle in Saudi Arabia. Her death is recorded in official U.S. Department of Defense casualty documentation.

Private Fails is buried at Taylor Cemetery.

Her service reflects the essential, often-overlooked role played by transportation and logistics personnel during the Gulf War. Though far from the front lines, their work carried daily risk and sustained the broader mission.
