Private First Class Roger Edward Valentine, A Soldier's Story
Private First Class Roger Edward Valentine was born on April 28, 1971, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He graduated from Sheffield High School and enlisted in the United States Army in October 1989, committing to military service at a young age.
Valentine trained in cavalry operations and was assigned to the 82nd Field Artillery Regiment. As tensions escalated in the Middle East following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, his unit prepared for deployment as part of the U.S. response.
In October 1990, Private First Class Valentine deployed to the Persian Gulf in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the Gulf War. Like many service members stationed in the region, his duties included patrol operations in areas still heavily affected by unexploded ordnance.
On March 2, 1991, Private First Class Roger Edward Valentine was killed while on patrol when he stepped on a bomblet. His death came after the conclusion of major combat operations, underscoring the continued dangers faced by those serving in the aftermath of war.
Private First Class Valentine is laid to rest at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery in Texas. His service and sacrifice remain part of the enduring record of those who gave their lives during the Gulf War.
