First Lieutenant James Robert Kalsu, A Soldier's Story
First Lieutenant James Robert Kalsu was born on April 13, 1945, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He graduated from Del City High School in 1963 and went on to attend the University of Oklahoma, where he distinguished himself both academically and athletically.
Kalsu was a standout football player throughout high school and college, earning national recognition during his time with the Oklahoma Sooners. In 1967, he was named an All-American—an honor reserved for the most elite players in the country, and was selected in the 8th round of the NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. He joined the Bills for the 1968 season and was named the team’s Rookie of the Year, quickly establishing himself as a formidable defensive lineman and a rising professional talent.
Alongside his athletic career, Kalsu was a member of the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) during college. Following the 1968 football season, he chose to honor his military commitment rather than seek deferment or exemption. He entered active duty with the United States Army and was commissioned as an infantry officer.
In November 1969, First Lieutenant Kalsu deployed to South Vietnam. Assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, he served during a particularly intense phase of the war, as U.S. forces conducted operations in the rugged terrain of the A Shau Valley.
On July 21, 1970, during the Battle of Fire Support Base Ripcord, First Lieutenant Kalsu was killed in action by heavy artillery fire while defending his position. He was 25 years old.
First Lieutenant James Robert Kalsu is buried at Resthaven Garden Cemetery in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Remembered as both an elite athlete and a dedicated Army officer, Kalsu’s legacy reflects a rare and resolute choice to set aside personal achievement and professional success in service to others.
