Master Chief Machinist Mate Ira Russell "Mack" McCurry
Born August 25, 1939 - Died February 29, 1976

Ira Russell “Mack” McCurry was born on August 25, 1939, in McGehee. He enlisted in the United States Navy on February 20, 1955, beginning a twenty-year career in naval service.

Rising to the rank of Master Chief Machinist’s Mate, McCurry served throughout the Vietnam War, including duty aboard the USS Josephus Daniels. He retired from the Navy on February 25, 1975, after two decades of service.

Following his military retirement, McCurry continued his commitment to public service by joining the Salem, Virginia, Police Department. On February 29, 1976, while investigating an automobile burglary, he was fatally shot in the line of duty.

Master Chief Machinist Mate Ira Russell “Mack” McCurry is buried at Sherwood Burial Park.
