Lance Corporal Michael Eugene Linderman Jr, A Marine's Story

Lance Corporal Michael Eugene Linderman Jr.
Born June 21, 1971 - Died January 29, 1991

Michael Eugene Linderman Jr. was born on June 21, 1971, in Roseburg, Oregon. A quiet, thoughtful young man, he graduated from Central Kitsap High School in 1989. He loved books, especially classic literature and poetry, and carried that inward, reflective streak with him into adulthood. Like many young men of his generation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in October 1989, hoping to earn money for college while serving something larger than himself.

By the fall of 1990, Lance Corporal Linderman deployed with the 1st Marine Division to the Persian Gulf as the United States and its allies responded to Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. What began as Operation Desert Shield soon transitioned into Operation Desert Storm, and the waiting gave way to combat.

On January 29, 1991, during the Battle of Khafji, one of the first major ground engagements of the Gulf War, Lance Corporal Linderman was killed in action when his armored vehicle was struck by enemy mortar fire. He was just nineteen years old.

Lance Corporal Michael Eugene Linderman Jr. rests at Roseburg Memorial Gardens in Roseburg, Oregon—remembered not only as a Marine who gave his life in service, but as a young man who carried poetry and possibility with him into war.
