Captain Kevin Ray Dolvin, A Marine's Story

Captain Kevin Ray Dolvin

Born December 14, 1960 - Died October 8, 1990

Captain Kevin Ray Dolvin was born on December 14, 1960, in Canton, Ohio, and raised in a community that valued hard work, faith, and service. A 1979 graduate of Hoover High School, Dolvin distinguished himself early as both an athlete and a leader, participating in football, track, and community athletics while remaining active in his church. Those who knew him would have recognized the steady discipline and sense of responsibility that would later define his military career.

He went on to attend Miami University in Ohio, continuing to build a life shaped by purpose and commitment. On June 5, 1984, Dolvin enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, choosing a path that would demand both courage and skill. He trained as a helicopter pilot, eventually flying the UH-1N Huey—a workhorse aircraft relied upon for transport, support, and combat operations. His assignments included service aboard the USS Jason, and later deployment to the Persian Gulf aboard the USS Okinawa during the buildup to Operation Desert Shield in 1990.

On the night of October 8, 1990, during training exercises over the Arabian Sea, Captain Dolvin’s helicopter went down. Despite search efforts, he was never recovered. He remains among those lost to the sea in service to their country—his final resting place unknown, but his sacrifice enduring.

Today, Captain Kevin Ray Dolvin is remembered at New Cumberland Cemetery in Ohio, where a memorial stands in his honor. It is a quiet place, far from the waters where he was lost, but it anchors his story in the soil of home. His life reflects the steady, uncelebrated commitment of those who serve—not for recognition, but because they are called to it.
