Lieutenant Colonel Donnie Ray Holland, An Airman's Story
Lieutenant Colonel Donnie Ray Holland, An Airman's Story
Lieutenant Colonel Donnie Ray Holland was born on September 1, 1948, in Bastrop, Louisiana, and grew up in a community shaped by hard work, faith, and quiet determination. He graduated from Bastrop High School in 1966 before attending Northwestern State University, where he earned his degree in 1970.
Before answering the call to military service, Holland dedicated himself to teaching, working as an instructor in industrial arts and drafting. In the classroom, he helped shape young minds, instilling discipline, precision, and pride in craftsmanship. Yet, like many of his generation, his path would ultimately lead him to serve his country in uniform.
He enlisted in the United States Air Force and trained as a pilot, quickly proving himself capable in one of the military's most demanding professions. Over the course of his career, he flew the F-4 Phantom II, a versatile and powerful fighter aircraft that defined an era of aerial combat. As his experience and leadership grew, he transitioned to the F-15 Eagle and joined the 355th Tactical Wing, an elite force tasked with maintaining air superiority.
In August 1990, following Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait, Lieutenant Colonel Holland deployed to the Persian Gulf as part of Operation Desert Shield, later transitioning into Operation Desert Storm. The conflict would mark one of the largest and most complex air campaigns in modern military history, with pilots like Holland carrying out critical missions in defense of international stability.
On January 17, 1991, the opening day of Operation Desert Storm, Lieutenant Colonel Holland’s aircraft failed to return from its mission. Like many airmen lost in the early hours of the conflict, his absence was felt deeply by his fellow pilots, his family, and the community he left behind. After the conclusion of the war, his remains were recovered, bringing a measure of closure to those who had waited.
Today, Lieutenant Colonel Donnie Ray Holland rests at Promised Land Cemetery in Hamburg, Arkansas, a quiet place that stands in contrast to the skies he once commanded. His life reflects both service and sacrifice: a teacher, a pilot, and a man who answered his nation’s call when it mattered most.
