A Marine's Story: Staff Sergeant Lance Milo Monsen

Staff Sergeant Lance Milo Monsen was born in Seattle, Washington, on April 25, 1955. His family moved to Peshtigo, Wisconsin, during his school years, and Staff Sergeant Monsen graduated from Peshtigo High School. He enlisted in the US Marines shortly after high school and made a career out of military service. Staff Sergeant Monsen had intended to retire from service in 1992. He deployed with the 2nd Marine Division to Saudi Arabia for Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield and the Gulf War in the fall of 1990. Staff Sergeant Lance Milo Monsen died of a heart attack on January 10, 1991. A Marine's Story: Captain Sterling Walter Hayden

  Captain Sterling Walter Hayden was born Serling Relyea Walter on March 26, 1916. He attended the Wassookeag School in Dexter, Maine, but left at 16 to work on a commercial schooner and found his passion as a sailor. Captain Hayden quickly worked up the ranks through fishing vessels, yachts, and steamers before qualifying as a master sailor and earning his first command aboard the Florence C. Robinson, a rigger, in 1938, at 22 years old.  Captain Hayden earned a screen test with Paramount pictures after the Boston Press published his image during the Annual Glouchest Massachusetts Fisherman's Race. He appeared in two films, Virginia and Bahama Passage, before leaving Hollywood to join the US Army for World War II. However, Captain Sterlin Hayden's US Army career was cut short after he broke his ankle during basic training. As a result, Captain Hayden was deemed unfit for combat and medically discharged. An Airman's Story: Captain Dixon Lee Walters Jr.

  Captain Dixon Lee Walters Jr. was born in Williamsburg, Virginia, on May 23, 1961. He graduated from Barwell High School in 1979 and graduated from the University of South Carolina in 1982. Captain Walters was a talented endurance athlete and regularly competed in triathlons. Captain Dixon Walters had initially decided to become an accountant but felt called instead to enlist in the US Air Force and joined the Special Operations crew of the C-130H Spectre Gunships. Captain Dixon L. Walters deployed to the Persian Gulf in December 1990 for Operation Desert Storm/Desert Shield and the Gulf War.  On January 31, 1991, while on a mission aboard "Spirit 03" in support of US Marine ground troops, "Spirit 03" launched into an attack upon a ground missile site, preventing its use upon ground troops, Captain Dixon Walters, as the Warfare officer, called evaded anti-aircraft fire while engaging the missile site and earned a Silver Star for his actions to eliminate threats fo...
