Staff Sergeant Lance Milo Monsen, A Marine's Story
Staff Sergeant Lance Milo Monsen was born on April 25, 1955, in Seattle, Washington. During his school years, his family relocated to Peshtigo, Wisconsin, where he attended and later graduated from Peshtigo High School. Shortly after high school, Monsen enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, beginning a career defined by long-term service and professional commitment.
Over the course of his military career, Staff Sergeant Monsen remained dedicated to the Corps and planned to retire from active duty in 1992, marking nearly two decades of service. In the fall of 1990, he deployed with the 2nd Marine Division to Saudi Arabia in support of Operation Desert Shield and Operation Desert Storm during the Gulf War, answering the call during a critical moment of international conflict.
Staff Sergeant Lance Milo Monsen died on January 10, 1991, while on active duty, as a result of a heart attack. He was 35 years old. He is laid to rest at Dunbar Memorial Gardens in Dunbar, Wisconsin.
Staff Sergeant Monsen’s story reflects the quiet constancy of a career Marine—someone who did not seek attention, but who stood ready when duty required. His service is remembered with gratitude and respect.
