Staff Sergeant Diobanjo Sanagustin, A Soldier's Story
taff Sergeant Diobanjo San Agustin was born on January 6, 1986, in the Philippines. As a child, he immigrated with his family to National City, California, where he built a new life and eventually chose to serve his adopted country through military service.
In 2007, San Agustin enlisted in the United States Army. During his first deployment in support of the War on Terror in Iraq, he took part in the U.S. military’s path-to-citizenship program and became an American citizen while deployed in Kuwait, a moment that reflected both commitment and belonging. Following that experience, he decided to pursue a career in the Army.
Over the course of his service, Staff Sergeant San Agustin completed three deployments. In addition to his initial deployment connected to Iraq, he deployed to Kosovo during the Bosnian conflict stabilization mission and later to Afghanistan. His career reflected the modern Army’s global responsibilities and the steady professionalism required of noncommissioned officers in prolonged conflicts.
On September 4, 2018, during his third deployment, Staff Sergeant Diobanjo San Agustin was involved in a fatal accident at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. His death marked the loss of a career soldier who had served across multiple theaters and missions over more than a decade.
Staff Sergeant San Agustin’s service stands as part of the enduring story of immigrant soldiers who chose to defend the United States, earning citizenship not just in law, but through years of duty, sacrifice, and leadership.
