Fireman Timothy Jerome Jackson, A Sailor's Story
Fireman Timothy Jerome Jackson, A Sailor's Story
Fireman Timothy Jerome Jackson was born on February 25, 1970, in Anniston, Alabama. He graduated from Anniston High School in 1988 and enlisted in the United States Navy shortly after, answering the call to serve at a young age.
Jackson was assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga and deployed to the Persian Gulf in 1990 in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm during the Gulf War. As a sailor aboard a forward-deployed carrier, his service contributed to naval operations critical to air support and regional security during a period of heightened international tension.
On December 22, 1990, while returning from authorized shore leave in Haifa, Israel, the ferry transporting sailors back to USS Saratoga sank. Fireman Timothy Jerome Jackson drowned in the accident, losing his life far from home during his period of active service.
Fireman Jackson is buried at Eden Hills Cemetery in Anniston, Alabama. His story reflects the reality that military service carries risk not only in combat, but also in the ordinary movements of duty, risks borne by young service members who stood ready during the Gulf War.
